The Riverina region of New South Wales is a thriving, highly productive region based on cropping, horticulture, viticulture, and livestock industries. Much of the secondary processing and food manufacturing is located within the region also. The Riverina Food Group (RFG) represents a range of food manufacturing businesses in this region, and it was one of the first agricultural groups to participate in the Australian Government's Greenhouse Challenge initiative.
Australian agriculture and food processing industries maintain a strong commitment to environmental management, and there are shared responsibilities between industry, governments, and communities to grow the regional and national benefits that flow from these industries. The Greenhouse Challenge provides a way that the Australian Government and industry can work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce costs to industry - to provide clear win-win outcomes.
All aspects of industry participation in the Greenhouse Challenge are voluntary, and they involve commitments from the Government, through the Australian Greenhouse Office, to assist with reducing emissions using costeffective abatement measures.
The diversity of agricultural industries in the Riverina enabled the RFG to bring a wide variety of supply and processing companies to the Greenhouse Challenge, complementing and enhancing the scope of the program. Over the past two years, the RFG has assisted companies to implement actions and to report on the financial and greenhouse benefits.
This report provides a summary of greenhouse actions undertaken by Challenge members of the RFG. Some of these actions are demonstrated through individual case studies. Included are interviews with managers and employees who have been directly affected by changes to production processes.
The report may also encourage other companies to evaluate their own production processes, and to explore improvements in energy efficiency and opportunities for simple win-win solutions. Finally, the report provides useful information on opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that will interest an audience well beyond the Riverina.
