Shared vision

The shared vision will signal to the world what all countries will strive to achieve together.

For Australia, the shared vision must be consistent with both the climate science and the values and priorities of the global community. It will guide international cooperation to tackle climate change for decades to come, and should signal ambition on both mitigation and adaptation.

Ideally, the shared vision should include both a long-term global goal for reducing carbon pollution and identify the year in which global emissions peak. These will guide the scale of reductions necessary and encourage the development and deployment of clean technology. Likewise, the shared vision should galvanise adaptation efforts and ensure that international assistance is targeted to where it’s needed most.

Australia was instrumental in securing agreement to include a shared vision and long-term global goal in the Bali Roadmap. We will continue to promote a shared vision that reflects the need for all countries to respond to climate change according to their national circumstances.

Countries are not equally responsible for the problem of climate change, but we do share a common responsibility for the solution.
