National Greenhouse and Energy Register
What is the Register?
The National Greenhouse and Energy Register (the Register) records corporations that have registered to report their greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production data under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (the NGER Act). Controlling corporations are obliged to apply for registration if they meet thresholds related to the amount of greenhouse gases they emit, or how much energy they consume or produce in a given financial year. Controlling corporations may also apply if they expect to meet a threshold. The Register may include corporations that do not meet a threshold for the trigger year in which they have registered.
The Greenhouse and Energy Data Officer (GEDO) is required to maintain a register for the purposes of the NGER Act.
The Register lists the following details:
- names of registered corporations and the members of their corporate groups
- trading names of the registered corporations and group members
- identifying details of each registered corporation and its group members (ABN, ACN, ARBN or trading name and street address)
- the section of the NGER Act under which the corporations are registered.
Why is the Register being published?
Under Section 16, subsection (3) of the NGER Act the GEDO may disclose the contents of part or all of the Register to the public. Moreover, part of the object of the NGER Act is to inform the Australian public about greenhouse and energy information collected under the NGER Act. Making the Register or an extract of the Register available to the public helps to meet this objective.
Publishing the Register or an extract of the Register also provides assurance that corporations are meeting their obligations under the NGER Act and shows that the GEDO is maintaining an accurate and current Register.

What other NGER information will be published?
The Register is only a part of the greenhouse and energy information that the GEDO may publish. The GEDO must publish on a website by February 28 each year the following totals reported for the corporate group of each registered controlling corporation (where the emissions threshold for the group is met) or Reporting Transfer Certificate holder, for the previous financial year:
- scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions
- scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions
- energy consumption.
The GEDO may also publish the following:
- the totals listed above for each member of a corporation’s group or each business unit of a corporation’s group
- the methods used to measure greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production for a corporation’s group.
Corporations that are included on the Register are required to report greenhouse and energy data to the GEDO under the NGER Act. If they do not meet the prescribed thresholds for a reporting year, they must still submit a nil report.
