Greenhouse and Energy Data Published—2008–09
Greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption data from around 230 Australian corporations has today been published on the Department of Climate Change website.
Secretary of the Department of Climate Change, Dr Martin Parkinson, said the data has been reported by Australian corporations who met or exceeded the emissions publishing threshold under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007.
"Of more than 690 corporations that were registered for 2008-09, around 230 met the 125 kilotonnes carbon dioxide equivalent emissions threshold, and their data has been published today," Dr Parkinson said.
"Because this is the first year of reporting, we have focussed on supporting industry through the registration and reporting process. We will continue to work with corporations, and their representative bodies, to provide additional guidance and support for future reporting."
Greenhouse and Energy Data Officer (GEDO), David Rossiter, said a small number of corporations who met the publishing threshold for 2008-09 had applied for an exemption from publication for some of their data. These corporations are listed but the relevant data entry is left blank.
"The Act requires publication of this data, but registered corporations can apply for an exemption from publication in certain circumstances, and we consider these applications on a case by case basis," Mr Rossiter said. "We expect the published data will be updated periodically as applications are processed and other updates to data occur."
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 introduced a single national framework for reporting and dissemination of information related to greenhouse gas emissions, greenhouse gas projects, energy consumption and energy production of corporations. It provides the necessary framework for Australia to meet its international reporting obligations, while streamlining the reporting requirements for corporations by reducing duplication across Federal, State and Territory government agencies.
Registrations for corporations opened on 1 July 2008 and were required by 31 August 2009. Reports were due on or before 31 October 2009. The data reported is the respective totals for scope 1 emissions, scope 2 emissions and energy consumption.
This data may not reflect a corporation’s potential liability under the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, and does not represent emissions and energy use across the whole economy. The published data is not the total emissions and consumption data reported—only that of registered corporations who met or exceeded the publishing threshold.
