Senator the Hon. Penny Wong
Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Water
Coalition pledges to reverse action on climate change if elected
23 August 2009
Nationals Senate Leader, Barnaby Joyce, today made clear that if the Coalition were re-elected, it would wind back the Rudd Government's action on climate change.
When asked by Channel Nine's Laurie Oakes if the Coalition would try to dismantle the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, Senator Joyce replied "yes".
Oakes: Your reputation, let's not use weasel words, you would try to dismantle it?
Joyce: Of course.
Minister for Climate Change and Water, Senator Penny Wong, said the Coalition could not be trusted on climate change.
"For twelve years in government, John Howard and the climate change sceptics refused to act," Senator Wong said.
"Under the Coalition, Australia was part of the problem on climate change, not part of the solution.
"Today, Senator Joyce has made it clear that not only would a re-elected Coalition refuse to act - it would actually take Australia backwards on climate change."
