pv panelsAustralia was one of the first countries in the world to introduce a nationally mandated renewable energy target. Many other countries are supporting renewable energy through a range of policies and programs.

Several countries have achieved relatively high levels of wind power penetration. Denmark generates nearly one-fifth of its electricity with wind turbines—the highest percentage of any country. Spain, Portugal, Germany and Ireland also have significant proportions of wind power.

Solar thermal power stations operate in the United States of America (USA) and Spain, and photovoltaic power stations are popular in Germany and Spain. The world's largest geothermal power installation is in California (USA).
