Background

This report forms part of the planning and preparation by the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) for an assessment of vulnerability to climate change of the Australian coastal zone, under the umbrella of the National Climate Change Adaptation Programme (NCCAP). The purpose of the report is to:

  1. provide a concise summary of the extent of knowledge (including gaps) of:
    • methods for assessing potential impacts of climate change on coastal systems;
    • the data required to conduct such assessments;
    • scientific understanding of the sensitivity of coastal systems to climate change, including climate-related thresholds; and
  2. identify and prioritise research needs that will lead to a feasible and practical vulnerability assessment within a reasonable timeframe.

The report has two parts with Part I providing an Executive Summary and a Technical Summary and Part II providing the detailed analysis for the various coastal systems and components.
