Climate Change: manage the RISKS

Risk Management Guidance Workshops - 30 May to 14 June 2006

The climate is changing. Average temperatures across Australia are rising and this is likely to be accompanied by changes in rainfall, intensity of storms and cyclones and the severity of drought. The changes potentially affect the planning and day to day operations of businesses, government agencies and other organisations.

Good governance in both the private and public sectors requires executives to inform themselves of the risks that might flow from climate change, and to take appropriate steps to deal with those risks.

To help business and government plan for the impacts of climate change, two-hour Climate Change and Risk Management Guidance Workshops were held in every Australian capital city between May and June 2006. These workshops were aimed at company directors, senior managers and specialist risk managers.

Workshops were presented by Australian Government representatives, leading Australian climate scientists and specialists in economics, risk management and public policy from Marsden Jacob Associates and Broadleaf Capital International Pty Ltd.

The workshops were based around the publication Climate Change Impacts and Risk Management: A Guide for Business and Government. This guide shows how routine application of the Australian and New Zealand Standard for Risk Management, AS/NZS 4360:2004 can be extended to include the risks generated by climate change.
