Introduction

The Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) of the Department of the Environment and Heritage, is currently managing the Greenhouse Action in Regional Australia (GARA) R&D Plan. The aim of the GARA R&D Plan is to engage with regional stakeholders and Australia’s research organisations to deliver emissions abatement and climate change adaptation options for agriculture, forestry and natural resource management. The 2006 – 2007 R&D prospectus is currently available from the AGO website: www.greenhouse.gov.au/agriculture/rdplan.html

The component of the 2006 – 2007 GARA R&D prospectus that focuses on climate change impacts on natural resource management (Theme E) has been revised to include a new priority (E3). This new priority seeks projects that will support the development of a more detailed knowledge base regarding the impacts of climate change on carbon fl uxes in the Australian forest estate. This document describes AGO priorities for this research agenda. It provides guidance to those considering preparation of expressions of interest against this research theme as well as giving an indication of current AGO intentions against several of these priority areas. The research described here will contribute to a broader AGO agenda on carbon cycle research. This agenda is described in the Blueprint for Australian Terrestrial Carbon Cycle Research (Australian Greenhouse Office, 2005).
