Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Sustainability Snapshots: helped develop regional "Snapshots" program which aims at engaging the public for short 10 minute snapshots relating to various sustainability messages including energy conservation and distribution of promotional prompts such as CFL, shopping bags etc.
- Participation in regional REFIT program providing energy and water audit, fitting of CFLs and AAA shower heads, hose nozzle etc for just $39.
Travel
- Investigating introduction of B20 biodiesel blend for use in Council's Waste Collection Vehicles
- Through development of Local Geodiversity Action Plans will also consider including use of other alternate fuels and technologies.
Corporate
- Council Admininistration Building
- used security system to link and control time of operation for lights, air con, hot water etc, and implemented timer and sensor lights to meeting rooms and storerooms.
- Installed voltage reduction units to fluoro lights of open plan office.
- Provided shade cover to 13 split system air conditioning units on roof of Admininistration Building.
- Enabled Energy Star component of computer monitors.
- Realising savings of greater than 113 tonnes CO2 and $10,000 per annum.
- Relamping of existing light fittings in public display area at Hunter Wine Interpretive Centre saving 12 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
- Fitted voltage reduction units to fluoro lights at Kurri Library.
- Fitted push button/light switch to HWS at several sporting facilities.
- Fitted timer to storage HWS at Cessnock Library.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Currently in process of developing Local Geodiversity Action Plan.
