Darwin City Council
Being environmentally responsible is a high priority for the Darwin City Council. Joining the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia program gives us another way in which we can work in partnership with the community on many important issues. The Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia program should allow us to make better use of energy including working towards reduction targets for greenhouse emissions.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Conducting the Community emmission inventory and forecast to identify and quantify greenhouse gas emissions in the Darwin municipality. During 05/06 Milestones 2 and 3 will include the setting of emission reduction goals and development of the Local Action Plan.
Travel
- Council is trialling the use of hybrid cars such as the Prius to determine the feasibility of incorporating hybrid cars into Council's car pool to reduce petrol consumption and emissions from Council vehicles. Bicycle use is also encouraged for Tourists and residents visiting the CBD.
Corporate
- Council is conducting an energy audit program of all Council owned and managed buildings to develop an energy and emission reduction action plan. Emissions from Shoal Bay landfill have been reduced by 96 per cent during the past 8 months due to the installation of a Renewable Energy Facility which collected 2,781,607 m3 of greenhouse gases produced by decomposing waste. A 1 MW PowerStation is then converting these gases into energy (green power).
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Continue to reduce greenhouse emissions from landfill by installing gas collection systems in new waste cells as soon as possible.
- Complete Modules 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the CCP program and implement the emission reduction action plan.
- Implement initial Action, identified by Energy Audits on Council buildings, including energy savings and emission reduction through better control of after hours airconditioning and security lighting.
