Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Lismore City Council has proven leadership in ecologically sustainable development (ESD) through the development of the largest 'state-of-the-art', fully automated worm farm in the Southern hemisphere which includes curbside organics collection.
- Council has collection points for the recycling of compact fluorescent tubes and bulbs.
- Power to Make a Difference Program was launched in 2007. Through this program Council has installed energy monitors in each of the local high schools in the area and supported the schools with a step by step program for conducting an energy audit.
- The Lismore Local Action Plan was adopted in April 2007 which led to the creation of an internal sustainable working group to implement the recommended actions across council.
- Council actively monitors its energy consumption through quarterly foot printing and reporting.
Corporate
- Council recently amended its Development Control Plan to ensure that all new streetlights meet the minimum energy efficiency standard.
- Council purchased its first hybrid car in 2007.
- Waterless urinals have been installed at the Depot.
- The heat from pumps at the public swimming pool is used to heat water for showers; backwash is used to flush toilets.
- Sensor lights are used in toilets and hallways in Administration Building.
- Four cylinder cars and alternative fuelled cars are now part of the fleet.
