Council believes that climate change is a serious issue that needs local and international action to ensure that our community can live and work in a healthy, sustainable environment both now and in the future.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
Council has worked with the community to assist in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through:
- offering rebates for compost bins and worm farms
- providing financial support to the Sydney Water WaterFix retrofitting program
- providing household sustainability assessments
- providing no interest loans to low income earners for the purchase of water and energy efficient goods
- giving away energy efficient light globes.
Travel
- Council is updating its Bike Plan to improve commuter access to the CBD. There will be new bike path locations and Council encourages the RTA to construct bike paths on major road developments in the LGA.
Corporate
- Council is now purchasing 10% of its street lighting electricity from GreenPower sources.
- All new developments in the Liverpool LGA require the use of energy efficient globes for street lighting.
- Council has completed energy and water audits of its top consuming facilities. An Energy Savings Action Plan and a Water Savings Action Plan has been prepared to guide implementation of energy and water saving initiatives. Council has completed retrofitting of showers, taps and lighting in its major facilities.
- A large portion of Council's passenger fleet vehicles have been downsized from 6 cylinder to 4 cylinder vehicles through a revised Motor Vehicle Policy.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Council is currently developing a corporate Sustainability Framework that will provide a mechanism for corporate reporting and planning processes and environmental strategies to be more effectively linked. This will include the development of a Sustainable Purchasing Action Plan.
- Through implementing the next stage of the Motor Vehicle Policy, Council will begin offsetting its carbon emissions through a tree planting program.
