Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Council has commenced a fortnightly green waste collection service to houses and units in the Marrickville Local Government Area. The green waste collection service is part of a comprehensive waste strategy designed to provide a more convenient way for residents to reduce their waste, recycle more garden waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- The Watershed Sustainability Resource Centre - In partnership with City of Sydney Council, run The Watershed Sustainability Resource Centre. The centre displays and sells energy and water savings devices, provides educational material and runs free workshops for the public. The workshop series includes an energy smart workshop that focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving money on your energy bills.
- The Greenhouse Effect is the subject of general community education at every Council Festival (min 3 per year) stalls and activities (energy wheel) are used to discuss the issue with residents and staff give away items such as energy efficient light bulbs.
Travel
- Futurefleet - Council has introduced Futurefleet, a working group that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Council's passenger & commercial fleet.
- The working group is looking at introducing a sliding scale leaseback fee to encourage leaseback holders to choose smaller more fuel efficient vehicles.
- Council currently has two Hybrid Toyota Prius and all utility vehicles run on LPG. Council hosted a biodiesel information session for the public and other Councils and is now running a biodiesel trial. The trial involves four trucks which have made the switch to B20 (20% biodiesel & 80% regular diesel).
- Transport Access Guides - Council has produced new Transport Access Guides for two venues within the LGA which outline train, bus routes and cycleways.
Corporate
- Greenhouse Purchasing - Council continues to participate in the CCP Plus program and is now participating in CCP Plus Greenhouse Purchasing program.
- Energy efficient building upgrades - Energy efficiency projects such as lighting upgrades at Councils administration depot and library buildings, double glazing windows, installation of photovoltaic tiles at Tillman Park Child Care Centre and upgrades to street lighting have contributed to Councils greenhouse gas abatement.
- Strategic Water and Energy Team - Council introduced a working group which focuses on strategic water and energy projects. The group includes representatives from across Council.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Continue to implement energy and transport initiatives for schools.
- Continue to participate in regional abatement programs eg, SSROC (Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils).
- Reach milestone 5 in the CCP Plus Greenhouse Purchasing Program.
- Continue to implement energy efficiency projects in Council facilities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
