City of Ryde
The City of Ryde supports the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia program and is committed to achieving sustainable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality wherever practicable. The City will work through the program's tangible performance-based milestones framework as quickly as is reasonably possible to develop a program of cost-effective and sustained greenhouse abatement for the benefit of our local environment and the wider community.

Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Council is implementing a local air quality management plan that incorporates community greenhouse reduction strategies
- BASIX Building Sustainability Index and local Energy Smart Water Wise DCP
- Involvement in National Tree Day.
- Involvement in Fridge Buy Back since September 2006, 1,835t CO2 tonnes abated
Travel
- Adopted City Wide Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy to inform Council policy and lead towards an improved transport future for the City of Ryde.
- Bikeways network has been updated.
- Model Transport Assistance Policy - Council offers its staff assistance in the form of financial assistance for the purchase of public transport.
- Flexipasses or travel passes to be used for work based travel.
Corporate
- Corporate Sustainability Strategy to implement, along with other sustainable urban design features, identified energy and cost saving initiatives for the City Of Ryde.
- Council is purchasing 10 per cent of total energy supply as Green Energy
- Staff Enviro Ed Team is raising staff awareness to energy conservation
- Energy audits completed and sustainability improvements implemented across Councils top 12 energy consuming facilities.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Continued staff and community awareness programs.
- Continued investigation of energy saving measures as part of the Energy Savings Action Plan and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Action Plan.
- Council is looking at purchasing 10 per cent green power across all sites.
