Thuringowa recognises the implications of greenhouse gas for future generations. We are firmly committed to reducing the effects of our own operations and we see ourselves as a catalyst for change in the community. We are making a difference.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Council has implemented community waste and recycling education programs to raise awareness of its importance and environmental benefits
- Council has hosted a competition to encourage community residents to reduce water use by 75L per day.
Travel
- Replacement of unleaded petrol with E10 in Council's 60 strong fleet.
- Purchase of five petrol-electric vehicles for Council's fleet including labelling.
- 4 cylinder vehicles have been purchased in lieu of larger vehicles where appropriate.
- An LPG vehicle underwent trial to determine possible benefits.
- Construction of extra secure bicycle facilities for staff.
- A bus is provided free of charge to Thuringowa residents to and from the annual show.
- The public can now pay rates and fees online, reducing transportation.
- Community Abatement Grant with Noosa Shire and Rockhampton County Councils to develop Green Travel Plan tools and guidelines.
Corporate
- Replacement of water boiling facilities with 16 energy efficient instant boil units.
- Recycling in Council buildings of all products including paper, cardboard, plastics, metals and toner catridges.
- Council has a best practice kerbside recycling scheme and promotional program.
- Recycle bins are provided at public events.
- Council uses electronic agendas and minutes for all Council meetings.
- Conversion from thick clients and PCs to thin clients and laptops.
- Energy audits for all Council buildings was undertaken.
- Installation of energy smart electricity meters.
- Riverway sustainable development policy and design featuring an energy tower, renewable energy lighting, water reuse initiatives, recycled waste facilities and products and interpretive centre.
- Construction of an Eco Active Centre to educate the community on sustainability.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Construction of an 11 lot Sustinable Village.
