Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Council is implementing an ongoing environmental education program focused on a broad range of sustainability issues. For example EcoSchools Grant Program, Waste Education, and an annual World Environment Day and Schools Expo.
Travel
- Review of corporate fleet to reduce numbers and to purchase smaller, fuel efficient vehicles.
- Trialling biodiesel and commencing access to E10 with fleet card.
- Larger vehicles only where there is a specific requirement for work purposes.
- Developing regional trial to promote non-car transport and recreational strategies.
Corporate
- Council is undertaking a detailed facilities study, as a precurser to an Energy Performance Contract for major sites.
- Energy Revolving Fund established to provide resources for smaller projects such as community centres and other small buildings.
- Senior management commitment to incorporating sustainability into organisational culture, including staff induction, Green Buildings and Green Purchasing Policies.
- Reviewing management of utilities accounts to improve accountability for energy and water use.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Council is implementing an Energy Performance Contract.
- Participation in the LGSA's (Local Government and Shires Association) Sustainable Choice Procurement Program.
- Use of the 'Sustainability Health Check' program put together by the DEC (Department of Environment and Conservation) and Local Government Managers Australia.
- Formation of a cross-organisational Sustainability Working Group.
