Waverley Council
Waverley Council is proud to participate in ICLEI's (Local Governments for Sustainability - Oceania) Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) initiative. Waverley Council joined the CCP program in November 1998 as part of a range of programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at a local level. We have now achieved Milestone 5, and Council will soon consider progressing to CCP Plus.
Global warming is not something that may happen in the remote future. It is occurring now and has the potential to have a dramatic impact on our local area. It is hard to imagine what low lying Bondi will be like when sea levels rise and the ocean advances 90 metres inland, as predicted.
CCP offers a practical system for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Every little bit will help to tackle this global problem.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Council successfully promotes the reduction of community greenhouse gas emissions through the provision of services, community education strategies and specially developed environmental programs. These activities include: provision of waste recycling and greenwaste services, workshops and events; residential audit and retrofit program; sustainable schools program; business environmental education program and community environmental events, workshops and programs.
Travel
- Council is dedicated to developing sustainable transport options. Council has introduced innovative vehicles and fuels as part of the fleet vehicle program and recently initiated the introduction of a successful community car share program.
- Council is currently building on a successful range of sustainable transport initiatives including a walking school bus, Transport Access Guides, and walking and cycling promotion activities for the benefit of both the community and Council staff.
Corporate
- Council has achieved substantial reductions in corporate waste and vehicle fleet emissions as a result of effective corporate waste recycling and fleet management programs (inlcuding the use of fuel efficient vehicles and alternative fuels).
- Additional Council initiatives to reduce corporate greenhouse gas emissions include the use of greenpower, solar powered parking meters, and the implementation of energy efficient fixtures and appliances.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Council continues to implement strategies to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions in both the corporate and community sectors. Future abatement measures include sustainable transport and greenwaste initiatives as well as energy efficiency improvements in Council buildings and streetlighting.
