Willoughby City Council
As a community we must challenge ourselves to become more concious of our environment, the way we use resources such as energy, our buying habits and actions. We are all responsible for our future, our environment and our planet. Willoughby City Council will continue to be a leader in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions within our community and beyond. I urge everyone to strive with Council to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Clr Pat Reilly, Mayor, Willoughby City Council.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Willoughby City Council has undertaken a number of initatives to influence the community, including residents and businesses, to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. This includes energy performance requirements through the development control process.
- All developments including renovations and refits are required to meet minimum energy performance standards.
- The Council has run a number of workshops and expos on energy around the home, provided free energy audits for residents and energy efficient lighting give-aways.
Travel
- Workplace travel plan offering interest free loans to staff wishing to purchase season tickets on public transport, or purchase bicycles for travel to work.
Corporate
- A range of projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions including the installation of solar streetlights in the main shopping district.
- Energy Performance Contract (EPC) - the EPC is a negotiated contract between Council and an energy services contractor that guarantees a level of performance measured through energy savings. The energy savings are achieved through the upgrade of equipment and processes. The savings from the utility bills covers the upfront capital cost of the upgrade. Council’s EPC has guaranteed savings of 7, 950, 755 MJ or 875 tonnes of CO2 and $110, 949 in utility bills.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Redevelopment of civic facilities in Chatswood including the library, town hall and old administration building. In its place a new concert hall, theatre, exhibition space and library will be built incorporating sustainable design principles. Council is committed to reducing energy consumption on the site with a target of 50 per cent of the 1999 levels.
- Willoughby is currently varying the EPC to include a co-generation plant at the Leisure Centre. Natural gas will be used to generate electricity and the thermal energy from this process will be used to heat the swimming pool. The predicted savings are 750 tonnes of CO2 per year.
