Woollahra Municipal Council
Through our involvement in this program, we have developed clear environmental objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the greater efficiency of our own operations. In benchmarking our own environmental goals and performance we have raised awareness within the organisation of the impact of greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. It is vitally important for us to work alongside our community in identifying practical solutions and management options for sustainable living.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Council's active community waste minimisation and management program that includes waste collection, kerbside collection of recyclable materials (including green waste) and community education focusing on the waste principles of avoid, reduce, reuse and recycle, has abated 20,262 CO2-e tonnes of community greenhouse gas emissions.
Travel
- Through the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Plus program, Council is participating in the Sustainable Transport Project.
- Council has recently completed milestone 1 of the project, having undertaken the gap analysis of Council's activities and functions.
Corporate
- Council has successfully reduced vehicle fleet emissions by 30.9 per cent since 1999/2000 through an active fleet management program that has introduced purchasing policies encouraging the downsizing of vehicles, upgrades to improved engine standards and fuel conversions.
- The re-inventory (2003/2004) recorded Council's vehicle fleet emissions of 836 CO2-e tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, down from 1,210 CO2-e tonnes recorded for Council's base year, 1999/2000.
- Council is purchasing 6% GreenPower for the supply of energy to Council's four highest energy using sites.
- Council is also preparing an Energy Savings Action Plan, that will direct further action to reduce energy use from Council's top ten energy using sites.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Council has grasped further opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction which have been identified within the corporate and community sectors through a variety of actions including: streetlighting improvement program, waste avoidance and resource recovery actions and further energy efficient building upgrades.
- The actions nominated are consistent with the target abatement areas identified by the re-inventory (milestone 5).
- Council is committed to implementing the actions identified through the Energy Savings Action Plan.
