Abestz misleads on impact of carbon price on aviation
Media release
16 August 2011
GC 245/11
The Shadow Minister for Workplace Relations, Senator Eric Abetz, should get his facts straight before trying to score a political point against the Government.
Responding to today’s announcement by Qantas, Senator Abetz said:
“Clearly Labor’s Carbon Tax has not assisted Qantas in its need to compete internationally.”
“Planes can’t fly without fuel and the imposition of Labor’s Carbon Tax will have on operating costs is bad news for the aviation sector.”
Before rushing to join Tony Abbott’s scare campaign, Senator Abetz should spend a moment fact-checking his media releases – there will be no carbon price on international aviation flying from Australia.
Either Senator Abetz is ignorant of this fact or he is deliberately misleading the public.
The Gillard Government’s plan to introduce a carbon price from 1 July 2012 has nothing to do with Qantas’ announcement.
For Senator Abetz to misrepresent the announcement for his own political ends is hardly surprising however – the Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, tried a similar tactic in Parliament.
Qantas workers deserve better than the Coalition trying to score political points at their expense.
Senator Abetz has today revealed just how far the Coalition is prepared to go in its unprincipled fear campaign against a carbon price – they are not only playing politics without regard to the facts but are also deliberately exploiting workers’ anxiety.
