Hunt splits with Abbott on international permits
Media release
11 July 2011
GC 204/11
Shadow Minister for Climate Action, Greg Hunt needs to explain urgently why he has changed his position on the use of international permits to help reduce Australia’s contribution to carbon emissions.
Greg Hunt has previously supported using international permits to reduce our carbon footprint:
“We have unashamedly tried to source the cheapest abatement because once verified, a tonne of carbon is a tonne of carbon. And that is all that the planet knows.”
GREG HUNT – SPEECH TO NATIONAL PRESS CLUB – 10 FEB 2010
And he left his leader exposed yesterday in saying it still could be Coalition policy to use international permits if there were on the basis of being the lowest cost:
“I’ll just make a brief point. Our emissions reduction fund is a very simple proposition. We will purchase the lowest cost abatement wherever it may occur and we'll purchase it on the basis of being the lowest cost
HUNT – PRESS CONFERENCE – 10 JULY 2011
It’s clear that Greg Hunt knows something that Tony Abbott doesn’t –that by ruling out the use of international permits the Opposition will cost jobs and slug taxpayers with even higher costs in reducing our emissions.
It’s now time for Greg Hunt to make his position clear: does he think that using verified international permits is part of having the lowest cost of reducing our emissions and if he doesn’t, why does he want to slug Australians even more?
