Abbott Absurdities on Climate Change - Bulletin No.2

Media release
3 June 2011
GC 155/11

Another week, another batch of wild claims by Tony Abbott on a carbon price.

Claim 1: “The steel, the plastic, the cement, the aluminium are all very energy intensive – all is going to increase very significantly under a carbon tax.” (30 May 2011, visit to FAW Building Supplies, Mitchell, ACT).

Fact: Each of the sectors listed will be assisted under the Gillard Government’s carbon price to support jobs. Under the former Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, steel, cement, plastics and aluminium producers qualified for between 66 per cent and 94.5 per cent shielding from the carbon price.

Claim 2: “Let there be no doubt about the intentions of the authors of this carbon tax legislation. They want to kill manufacturing industry in this country.” (1 June 2011, House of Representatives).

Fact: The Gillard Government supports a vibrant and innovative Australian manufacturing industry. The carbon price will include assistance to support manufacturing jobs and competitiveness.

Claim 3: “Even under the Government’s own modelling, by 2020 there will be a 35 per cent reduction in coal production ...” (1 June 2011, House of Representatives).

Fact: The Treasury modelling estimated there would be a 66 per cent increase in Australian coal mining output from 2008 to 2050 under the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (Australia’s Low Pollution Future: The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation).

In addition Mr Abbott has called for mining executives to turn into political activists, continued demanding a people’s revolt and warned that he will persist with his mobile scare campaign.

The purpose of these Bulletins is to hold Mr Abbott accountable for his misleading and deceptive claims.

I intend to continue reassuring the public that the Gillard Government’s carbon price will have none of the absurdly exaggerated impacts claimed by the Opposition Leader.
