Abbott absurdities on climate change - Bulletin No.1

Media release
27 May 2011
GC 137/11

This week we heard the following from Tony Abbott on climate change.

Mr Abbott claimed food and grocery prices would rise by 5 per cent under a $26 a tonne carbon price even though Treasury modelling showed prices of these goods would rise by between 0.6 and 0.8 per cent.

He claimed a carbon price meant the entire manufacturing sector was certain to die, ignoring the significant assistance that will be provided to support jobs in the most affected industries.

He verballed Professor Ross Garnaut, saying the prominent economist had backed “direct action” policies but failed to admit the truth: that Professor Garnaut has said market based policies are superior to government regulation for tackling climate change.

The purpose of this Bulletin is to hold Mr Abbott accountable for the misleading, inaccurate and deceptive claims he continues to make in this important debate.

Mr Abbott is still putting his political career before the interests of all Australians.

The fact is Mr Abbott does not really believe in climate change which is why he has a policy that will not work.

I intend to continue to remind Mr Abbott and, more importantly, the Australian people of the absurd claims he is making.
But then again we should not expect much more from an Opposition Leader who once said:

“If you look at Roman times, grapes grew up against Hadrian's Wall. In medieval times they grew crops in Greenland. In the 1700s they had ice fairs on the Thames.” - LATELINE, 19 NOVEMBER 2009
