New Department of Climate Change analysis of the Opposition’s climate change policy has confirmed that it will not achieve a 5% target by 2020.
The analysis shows that the Opposition policy will actually see emissions increase by 13% from 2000 levels.
The analysis is based on the experience of the Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme.
Tony Abbott said at his doorstop on 2 February:
ABBOTT: What we are proposing today is modelled quite closely on the New South Wales Labor Government’s GGAS Scheme.
GGAS achieved around 4.7 million tonnes of additional abatement at a cost of around $200 million - meaning that each tonne of abatement cost around $40.
The analysis finds likely abatement of around 40 million tonnes of abatement in 2020 – well short of the 138 million tonnes required to meet a 5% target.
Rather than achieve the minimum 5% emission reduction target, the Liberal climate con job will actually see emissions increase by 13% from 2000 levels.
That means taxpayers will be slugged with a $10 billion tax bill for a policy that will actually see emissions increase.
Mr Abbott has been dishonest with the Australian people about his climate change policy. We know he thinks climate change is “absolute crap” and he has confirmed that with his con job of a climate policy.
It costs more, does less, and it is unfunded.
There is no point in implementing a climate change policy that doesn’t tackle climate change.
