Electric hot water system replacement in the Northern Territory

Stage 1 begins in 2010

Across Australia from 2010 states/territories are introducing stage 1 of the phase-out of greenhouse-intensive hot water systems.  This will see owners of existing houses and townhouses (class 1 buildings) located in gas reticulated areas being required to install a greenhouse efficient hot water system (i.e. gas, solar or heat pump) when an existing electric hot water system needs replacing.

However as less than 1% of the Northern Territory is gas reticulated the 2010 phase-out will not apply in the Northern Territory.

Stage 2 begins in 2012

Stage 2 is the extension of the phase-out of greenhouse-intensive electric water heaters in all class1 buildings (including areas without reticulated gas).
